Why the last letter matters
Endings carry a lot of structure in English. Plurals and verb forms pile words onto a handful of final letters: together S, E and Y end 6,537 of our 12,479 five-letter words, while J, Q, V end only a few.
Last letters in Wordle
Wordle’s answer list behaves differently from the dictionary. It avoids most plurals, so S drops from the top spot to just 2% of answers. The most common answer endings are E (18%), Y (16%), T (11%), R (9%). If your final tile is still unknown, these are the letters to test first. Many of the best starting words, such as ROATE and RAISE, put E in the last slot for exactly this reason.
Common endings to know
- -ER and -ED: comparatives and past tenses such as LATER or ASKED; very common in word games, less so in Wordle answers.
- -Y: adjectives like HAPPY, DIRTY and FUNNY make Y one of the best final-letter guesses in Wordle.
- -CH, -SH and -TH: two-letter endings that make a single sound, so they’re easy to miss when you think letter by letter.
