Rules and scoring

  • Words must contain at least four letters and must include the center letter.
  • Letters can be used more than once. Hyphenated words, proper nouns and offensive words are not accepted.
  • Four-letter words score 1 point. Longer words score one point per letter.
  • A pangram uses all seven letters at least once and earns a 7-point bonus. A "perfect" pangram uses each letter exactly once.

Your score climbs through ranks from Beginner to Genius (70% of the day's possible points). Finding every single word earns the unofficial top rank, Queen Bee. The rank table on this page shows the exact point targets for the day.

How to find more words

  • Chase the pangram first. Look for common endings such as -ING, -TION, -ED or -ER among the letters; long words often hide there.
  • Use the hint grid. The letter × length grid tells you how many words start with each letter at each length. When a cell says "2" and you only have one, you know exactly what to look for.
  • Use the two-letter list. Counting words by their first two letters (for example "TR-4") narrows your search far more than the full alphabet.
  • Add prefixes and suffixes. If you found TAIL, try RETAIL, TAILER or TAILING where the letters allow.
  • Shuffle the hive. A new arrangement of the outer letters often makes a hidden word pop out.

To explore any set of letters, use our Spelling Bee solver. It lists every possible word for a center letter and six outer letters.

Official vs. unofficial word lists

The puzzle's editor curates the accepted words, so the official list leaves out many obscure dictionary entries. When our editors haven't added the official answers yet, we show possible words (unofficial) computed from our dictionary and clearly label them. These lists are great for spotting candidates but may contain words the game rejects.

Spelling Bee FAQ

When does the new Spelling Bee come out?

A new hive is usually published around 3 a.m. Eastern Time each day.

What is a pangram in Spelling Bee?

A word that uses all seven letters at least once. Every puzzle has at least one, and each is worth its length plus seven bonus points.

Why doesn't the hive ever contain an S?

Allowing S would make it too easy to add plurals to every word, so it is left out of the letter set.

What does Genius mean?

Genius is the rank you reach at 70% of the day's maximum score. Queen Bee is awarded for finding every word.

Can I see yesterday's Spelling Bee answers?
