Words With Double Letters

222,013 of the 272,349 words in this dictionary (82%) use at least one letter twice, and 64,401 have a doubled letter side by side, as in BOOK or COFFEE. Choose a letter to see every word that repeats it. That helps when you are holding two of the same tile, or when a Wordle answer refuses to fit.

Letters doubled side by side

Lists of words where the two letters sit next to each other, most common pairs first.

Why double letters matter in word games

Drawing two of the same tile is awkward: a rack with two Os or two Ss leaves fewer distinct letters to build with. Words that spend both copies in one move clear the duplicate and keep your next rack balanced. Heavy letters are a different story. There is only one Z, J, Q, X and K in a standard Scrabble set, so a word with two of them needs a blank or a tile already on the board. Those plays are rare, but they are often worth a lot of points.

In Wordle, a repeated letter is easy to miss because one colored tile looks like the whole story. If your remaining guesses keep failing, try a five-letter word that uses one of your known letters twice.

Spelling also leans on doubles: a short vowel is usually followed by a doubled consonant when a suffix is added (HOP → HOPPING, BIG → BIGGER), which is why L, P, T and N pairs are so common.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a double-letter word here?

Any word that uses the same letter at least twice. The two copies can sit together, as in BOOK, or apart, as in BANANA. Each letter page also shows the words where the pair is side by side, and the words that use the letter three or more times.

Which letter appears twice in the most words?

E: 74,104 words in this dictionary use it at least twice. At the other end, only 20 words repeat X.

Can Wordle answers have double letters?

Yes. Repeated letters are allowed in Wordle, and they catch many players out because a single green or yellow tile does not tell you whether the letter appears again. When the usual candidates run out, check the five-letter words on the matching double-letter page.

Why do some letters never appear doubled side by side?

English spelling avoids certain pairs. In this dictionary Q, X never sit next to a copy of itself, while L, S, E, O, T and F double up constantly (FALL, MISS, SEEN, BOOK, BUTTER, OFF), often because a short vowel before them is followed by a doubled consonant.
