Yellow tiles: a letter somewhere in the word
A yellow tile tells you the letter is in the answer but not in the slot you tried. These lists show every five-letter word that contains the letter, with each occurrence highlighted, so you can quickly see where it tends to sit. To also rule out the slot where it turned yellow, type it into the yellow row of the Wordle solver.
How often does each letter appear?
The five most frequent letters in our five-letter word list are S (46%), E (44%), A (41%), R (30%), O (30%). At the bottom are Q, X, J, Z, each found in only a small slice of words.
Among Wordle answers, vowels rank E 46%, A 39%, O 29%, I 28%, U 20%. That is why strong openers test E and A along with two or three common consonants. The full analysis is on our best Wordle starting words page.
Getting more from letter lists
- Combine letters: two-letter runs such as ES, ER, AR cut a list of thousands down to a much shorter one.
- Look at positions: the highlighted examples show habits. Y prefers the end, and H often follows S, C or T.
- Mind doubles: words like LLAMA or GEESE contain a letter twice; in Wordle, a yellow and a grey copy of the same letter in one guess mean the answer has exactly one.
