How to use the word solver in three steps

  1. Give it your letters

Type the letters you have. Leave the box empty if you only know the shape of the word and want to search by filters alone.

  2. Describe the word

Use Starts with, Ends with, Contains and Length to describe what you know. Every filter is optional.

  3. Pick from the list

Scan the results from the longest group down, or switch the sort to Most common to see everyday words first.

One tool for many kinds of word puzzles

Most word puzzles ask you to find words from a set of letters, words that fit a pattern, or words of a set length. This solver handles each of those on its own or in any combination.

  • Letters only: type a rack or a letter wheel and get every word it makes. This is the classic unscramble.
  • Filters only: leave the letters empty and search by first letters, last letters, a fixed chunk and a length. For example, find every seven-letter word that starts with PRO and ends with ING.
  • Both: combine them, for example when you have tiles in hand plus letters already on a board.

The advanced filters are already open on this page because this is the version of the tool people use for pattern work.

How the filters work together

Starts with and Ends with pin letters to the beginning or end of the word. Contains requires a run of letters in that exact order somewhere in the word. Length sets the total number of letters. When you also enter rack letters, the letters in those filters are treated as already placed, the way tiles on a board are, so they don't have to be in your rack. That is what makes the solver useful for board games: put the board letter in Contains and see what you can build through it.

Combining filters with letters changes the question. Letters GNIPKCAR alone give about 160 words, and only eight of them have seven letters. Add Ends with ING and Length 7, and the ING counts as board tiles. Your rack now only has to supply the first four letters, which opens up 38 words, from picking and gaining to ranking and pairing, and any of them can be played through an ING already on the board.

Getting the most out of the results

Sort by what matters to you

Points ranks words by tile value, which is what you want in Scrabble-style games. Most common puts familiar words first, which suits crosswords, letter-wheel apps and riddles where answers are everyday words. A → Z is easiest for scanning a long list.

Jump to one length

The length buttons above the results hide every other group. Use them when a puzzle tells you how many letters the answer has.

Word solver strategies for common puzzle types

Letter wheels and word cookies

Enter the wheel letters and work from the longest word down. Once you have the long answer, most of the grid fills in. Our Wordscapes and Word Cookies pages ignore two-letter words for you.

Missing-letter puzzles

If you know the length and a few letters, use Starts with, Ends with and Contains together, or browse ready-made lists like words starting with QU and words containing PH. For positional patterns with gaps, try the crossword solver.

Word-length riddles

Set the length and nothing else to browse every word of that size, or go straight to the six-letter word list.

Why our word solver is different

The tool runs on its own dictionaries and scoring tables, so it is fast and works the same every time. There are no third-party lookups that can time out. Results come back in milliseconds even for 15 letters with blanks. Every result can be tapped for a definition, and each game list can be selected on its own, so you can solve for a casual puzzle or a strict tournament list without switching sites.
