How Contexto works
Type any word and Contexto tells you its position in a ranking of words ordered by similarity to the secret word. A rank of 50 means your guess is very close in meaning; a rank of 5,000 means you are far away. Spelling doesn't matter. What counts is meaning and how words are used together. Guesses are unlimited, and the game offers hints that reveal a word closer than your best guess.
Tips for finding the secret word
- Start broad. Try very different categories (a person, an animal, a place, an object, a feeling, an action) to see which area scores best.
- Follow the gradient. When a word lands in the top few hundred, explore its neighbours: synonyms, things it is used with, places it belongs.
- Think in contexts, not definitions. "Beach" and "sunscreen" are close because they appear together, even though they mean different things.
- Answers are usually common nouns. Everyday, concrete words are more likely than rare or abstract ones.
- Save hints for the end. One hint near the top of the ranking often reveals the whole theme.
