Using first-letter lists in Wordle
A green tile in the first slot shrinks the field fast: instead of thousands of candidates you are left with a few hundred, and usually far fewer once you add the other clues. Open the letter's page to scan the options, or jump straight to the Wordle solver and type the green letter into the first slot.
First letters are not evenly spread. In the classic Wordle answer list, S alone starts about 16% of all answers, and C, B, T follow. Letters such as K, Y, Z almost never start an answer, so a first-slot green for them is rare.
Which letters start the most words?
Across the whole dictionary, S leads with 1,521 five-letter words, ahead of C (888) and B (871). The rarest starting letters are X (15), Q (76), Z (98). The bar on each card shows the relative size at a glance.
Narrow it down with two letters
Consonant blends are good filters. The most common two-letter starts are listed under popular searches: CO, MA, RE, ST and more. Each one opens a shorter, focused list. For a broader view, see all five-letter words or words of any length starting with S.
Tips for word games
- Wordle and Quordle: once the first letter is known, look for patterns among the examples. Many share an ending like -ER, -AL or -Y. The Quordle solver does this for four boards at once.
- Scrabble and Words With Friends: five-letter words starting with high-value letters (J, Q, X, Z) can score well even without bonus squares.
- Crosswords: when you know only the first letter and the length, these lists are the quickest way to brainstorm.
