Recongize or recognize?
Did you mean recognize? Here's the right spelling and how to remember it.
Incorrect
recongize
Correct
recognize
Correct spelling: recognize. Misspelling: recongize.
letters the misspelling gets wrong or leaves out letters that shouldn't be there
Memory tip
There is a G: re-COG-nize. British English also writes recognise.
Why people write “recongize”
In quick, casual speech the G in recognize is often swallowed, which is how “reconize” happens. In careful speech and in the spelling the G is there: re-COG-nize, from the same Latin root as cognitive.
Spell-checkers catch the mistake in a document, but not in a handwritten note, a text message or a word game. Writing the word out a few times while saying the tricky part aloud is the quickest way to make recognize automatic.
