Why people write “sargent”
Sergeant is not spelled the way it is said: the first syllable sounds like “sar” but is written SER, so spelling it by ear gives “sargent”. There is also a silent E after the G. It keeps the G soft (a J sound), and leaving it out gives “sergant”.
Spell-checkers catch the mistake in a document, but not in a handwritten note, a text message or a word game. Writing the word out a few times while saying the tricky part aloud is the quickest way to make sergeant automatic.
