How Wordle works
Type any valid five-letter word and press enter. Each tile then changes colour:
- Green means the letter is in the answer and in exactly that position.
- Yellow means the letter is in the answer, but somewhere else.
- Grey means the letter isn't in the answer at all (or not as many times as you used it).
You get six guesses. Everyone in the world plays the same word on the same day, and a fresh puzzle arrives at midnight in your local time zone. Hard Mode forces you to reuse every green and yellow letter in later guesses, which removes the option of a "throwaway" word.
Strategy that actually saves guesses
- Open with coverage, not luck. A first guess built from common letters (think R, S, T, L, N and two or three vowels) tells you far more than a word you hope is the answer. Our best starting words list ranks them.
- Use the second guess to explore. If your opener found little, play a word with five fresh letters instead of reusing greys.
- Watch for doubles. Repeated letters (as in LLAMA or EERIE) cause many lost streaks. If the remaining candidates won't narrow down, test a double deliberately.
- Beware of letter traps. Patterns like _IGHT or _OUND can have six or more answers. Rather than guessing them one by one, play a word that tests several of the possible first letters at once.
- Let a solver do the bookkeeping. Enter your greens, yellows and greys into our Wordle solver to list every word that still fits.
About our hints and difficulty rating
Our hints are written to be used in order. The first two only describe the shape of the word (vowels and repeated letters), the next ones describe its meaning, and the last gives away the opening letter. Answer tiles can be flipped one at a time, so you can take a single letter and still finish the puzzle yourself.
The difficulty badge is our own estimate on a four-step scale. It rises for repeated letters, rarer letters such as J, Q, X or Z, and less common words, which are the things that tend to break streaks.
Wordle FAQ
What time does the new Wordle come out?
A new puzzle comes out at midnight in your device's local time zone, so players in different countries switch to the next word at different moments. Our pages follow the US Eastern date.
Can the same Wordle answer appear twice?
Answers have very rarely repeated. The answer list is curated, so a word that has already been used is unlikely to come back soon, which makes past answers a handy way to rule out candidates. Our Wordle archive lists past answers.
Are plurals ever Wordle answers?
Plurals ending in S or ES are almost never chosen as answers, although they are accepted as guesses. That makes plurals useful for testing letters but a poor bet for winning.
Who makes Wordle?
Wordle was created by software engineer Josh Wardle and bought by The New York Times in early 2022. WordFinderZ is not affiliated with the Times.
